The town has a unique climate which is high in the Eastern areas and low in the western areas because of the change in the altitude. ARAGONDA-JAGGERY
Aragonda is
predominantly an agro-market place. It has major production for mango,
tamarind, coconut, grain, sugarcane, jaggery and peanut. The jaggery comes in
two categories, the white or golden yellow colored, mostly from Aragonda or
western region is for consumption. and fetches a better price. Farmers have
increasingly taken to adding bleaching agents such as sodium thiosulphate,
(Hydros) which is prohibited for human consumption. The second variety is of
darker even black colour due to the nature of the soil. Generally, soils which
are alkaline will give rise to paler jaggery, which though attractive by look
is not as sweet as the darker one.It is mostly meant for brewing illicit
liquor.
Jaggery is used as an ingredient in both sweet and savory dishes across India and Sri Lanka. For example, a pinch of jaggery is sometimes added to sambar, rasam and other gravies which are staples in India.
Jaggery is a concentrated product of cane juice without separation of the molasses and crystals, and can vary from golden brown to dark brown in color. It contains up to 50% sucrose, up to 20% invert sugars, moisture content of up to 20%, and the remainder made up of other insoluble matter such as ash, proteins and bagasse fibers.
Jaggery is a rich source of iron due to the process involved, using iron utensils, it retains more mineral salts. Moreover, the process does not involve chemical agents. Indian Ayurvedic medicine considers jaggery to be beneficial in treating throat and lung infections; Sahu and Saxena found that in rats jaggery can prevent lung damage from particulate matter such as coal and silica dust. Gandhi felt that jaggery was healthier than refined sugar, as it was not introduced into the blood as rapidly. As such, he used it in his own personal diet and recommended it to use in his invented goat-milk diet (and all other diets/eating styles) as well.

HORSLEY HILLS
The famous hill resort of Andhra Pradesh, Horsley Hills is an
enthralling, charming little hill station. It is a beautiful summer resort with
luxurious vegetation and rich fauna. Named after WD Horsley, the then collector
of Kadapa District, these hills are situated at an altitude of 1,265m from the
sea-level. It is said that WD Horsley built himself a bungalow to escape the
heat waves from the plains during summer.
About 50kms
from Horsley hills, towards Madanapalle, there is Gurramkonda. The three sides
of the fort consist of perpendicular cliffs. Some local legend has it that the
name was derived from the fact that a horse was guarding the fort and that
place was unconquerable so long as the horse remained there. It makes a
beautiful place to visit.
GURRAM KONDA
Gurramkonda (Gurram-Konda means Horse-hill) is a hill-fort located
in Chittoor district on the Cuddapah (Kadapa) - Bangalore highway, around 32kms
from Madanapalle. The fort stands on top of a 500ft hill with three almost
perpendicular sides.
The fort was originally a mud & rock construction, under the control of the Vijayanagara (Hampi) kingdom. Later it passed through the hands of the Golconda sultans who strengthened the fortifications with rock walls, later the fort was taken over by the Marathas, the Cuddapah Nawabs, Hyder Ali & Tipu Sultan and was eventually by the British.
According to local legend, the hill-fort was called 'Gurramkonda' since there was a statue of a horse on top of the hill, which was believed to be the guardian of the fort. The fort was impregnable so long as the horse remained there. When the Marathas laid siege on the hill, they tried every trick in the book to conquer the fort but could not do so. When they learnt about the legend of the horse statue, a Maratha chief managed to scale the hill one night and carry away the horse. Thus the spell was broken and on the next attack, the fort fell to the Marathas.
Apart from a couple of temples on the hill, the main places to see are the fort ramparts, the Ranginimahal palace and the tomb of Mir Raza Ali Khan, who was Tipu Sultan's maternal uncle.
As a kid, I used to visit Kadapa quite often and every time we passed through Gurramkonda I would stare at the 'Ranginimahal' palace which is visible from the main road. I was quite fascinated by the quaint old structure, but never actually got the opportunity to stop and take a closer look at it. This time around I finally got to see Gurramkonda fort and the Ranginimahal from close quarters.

Pradesh. The prominent and highest cliff of the hills is referred to as the
"Nagari Nose" as it projects towards one side in the form of a human
nose. It can be seen for about 100-km, around and from Chennai lighthouse. This
cliff, which lies about 7-km north of Nagari, rises to a height of 855m above
the sea level and is popularly known as the "Nagari Murkonda".
An Ancient Lighthouse:
An Ancient Lighthouse:
Nagari Nose served as a lighthouse during the medieval period for
guiding navigation in the Bay of Bengal, since the nose was serving as a
landmark for the ships touching Chennai. A bonfire is made on the tip of the
nose, which used to guide the ships in those days. The then rajas of
Karvetinagaram bestowed a grant of 0.75 acre of wetland on a Jangam family in
Kemparapalem village, which lies at the foot of the hill for services rendered.
Even now, a big earthen oil-lamp is lit on every full moon day on the tip of the nose by one of the descendants of this 'Jangam' family who is still enjoying the hereditary land grant. Of late, the cliff is also used for mountaineering and range practices.

Raja & Rani Mahal, Chandragiri Fort
Built in 1000 AD in the form of fortifications with bastions and a
steep moat, Chandragiri was under the rule of Yadavarayas for about three
centuries and came into the control of Vijayanagara rulers in 1367. It rose
into prominence in 1568 AD and remained as seat of power for the later
Vijayanagara kings under whose reign the fortified area was further extended
and some of the magnificent buildings and temples were constructed. Some of the
important kavyas of Vijayanagara period are said to be composed here. In 1646
the fort was annexed into the Golkonda territory, subsequently came under
Mysore rule till 1792 and went into oblivion. Inside the fortification are seen
eight ruined temples of saivite and vaishnavite pantheons, Raja mahal, Rani
mahal and other ruined structures.
King's Palace: One of the finest examples of Indo-Saracenic architecture of Vijayanagara period, this imposing three storeyed palace adorned by the crowning towers representing certain Hindu architectural elements, was constructed with stone, brick, lime mortar and is devoid of timber. The central tower that covers durbar hall rises through two storeys. It is said to be the same venue where Sri Rangaraya granted the site of Fort St. George to the British in 1640. The floors are supported by massive pillars while the walls bear fine plaster and stucco decorations.
Queen's Palace: Similar to the Kings palace in style and method of execution, this edifice with ground floor looking like a stable and first floor containing quarters adorned with ornamental sikhara has a flat roof. Contrary to the popular belief that this place was meant for the queen or harem, the epigraphical record available from the basement speaks this building being a commander’s quarters.
